Democrats slam pledged rice quality

MP shows parliament ‘rotten' grain from Surin

A Democrat MP Thursday sliced open a bag of the government's pledged rice in parliament in a bid to demonstrate shoddy quality control of the stored paddy.

Warong Dejkitvikrom, the MP for Phitsanulok, said the rice, retrieved from Surin, was brown and rotten.

His display in the House drew protests from government lawmakers.

Can't let a little bit water get in the way of this brilliant scheme. So it has minor issues, but what government doesn't have issues like this all the time? Of the 7.7 million tons in storage Mr Warong, truth be known, got the only bag that was rotton. Those darn city boys with there big words and fancy clothes. Nah, cant keep it up. Hats off to the PTP supporters though that can go on with this daily. Example "This is Thailand. It rains here and humidity is a problem"....HAHAHA Government should have thought of that when they wanted to store the rice in the first place heay!!

Disc 44 - Warong needs to detail how and where he obtained the sack and the rotten rice and investigating officers should verify his stories. Investigating officers that work for PTP. No...OK independent investigating officers....No, Thaksin will pay them off. A hord of jounalists with the DP present. Now there's a no brainer..and then as you said the government are found out, you would blame the warehouse or the millers, still wouldn't blame the government. The sky is green my friend, the sky is green...

Sounds like a bunch of city boys to me. Farming has losses like this all the time. Sounds like water leaked into a storage bin. Happens all the time. If you leave it long enough you can make whisky from it. Fix the problem. Not all the rice is spoiled. Some got wet. This is Thailand. It rains here and humidity is a problem. The Dems know where to look because they had the same problem in the same wharehouses when they were in power and they didn't fix the problem.

gleentea #43 - I have NO evidence that it is NOT the original sack, and I have never said it was the original or not the original. You need to read my postings carefully and with unbiased mind. Depending on news reports along and just by showing a bag of rotten rice in Parliamnet is not convincing enough. An investigation is needed to ascertain the authenticity of the accusation. Warong needs to detail how and where he obtained the sack and the rotten rice and investigating officers should verify his stories.

    boontong,

"How do you know it was the origin sack based on this news report."
How do you know it's not?

    "Investigation is certainly needed here"
All of a sudden you're singing a different tune, in your previous comment your opinion was that it's not rice from the pledging scheme.

I reckon about 10 minutes after that rotten rice was spilled from that bag in parliament there was a few hundred phone calls made to rice warehouses throughout Thailand. The government callers undoubtably ordered the rice warehouse managers to check their stocks for rotten rice immediately, and to get rid of it, because the reporters might be coming. Anyone doubt that?

"The Pheu Thai-led government had also failed to explain the details of its government-to-government (G-to-G) rice deals, he said."

This might be an even bigger scandal, as PT said the surplus rice would be sold under G2G agreements, but still haven't provided any details.

banmebkk #31 - It is a horrible space to be in - trying to find fault. All Thais have the duty and responsibility to support the policies of a popularly and democratically elected government. It does not mean there are no challenges. The people elected government deserve a chance of my support and also criticism that does not have to be embedded with baseless accusation.

boontong come on it seem every thing about the scheme is corrupt. The country still dose know how ,when and at what price it is going to sell YOUR rice, not the government's rice

  • Discussion 38 : 08 Feb 2013 at 13.5838

"A committee is investigating the corruption allegations involving the scheme".

That will make the problem go away then.
