Traders oppose cigarette warning plan

The Thai Tobacco Trade Association is opposed to the Public Health Ministry's plan to require the world's largest graphic warning on cigarette packs, because it would affect small traders nationwide, association executive Varaporn Namat said on Friday.

The ministry last week said it plans to change the law and enlarge the graphic warning on cigarette packs to cover 85% of the space, larger than the current 55% which has been effective since 2010.

The proposal aims to curb the rise in numbers of people smoking cigarettes. It will be discussed again in two months.

The photos remind me of a book I used to use. Tropical diseses etc. One was blacklung from a coal miner. None of the photos had anything to do with smoking. I still have yet to see all these diseases caused by smoking. I doubt that the pictures will change anyone. They have not yet.

In my opinion if The Thai Traders Association objects to the new proposed laws, then they should be given a choice to either accept the proposed change in law or accept the medical costs associated with treating people with the diseases associated with smoking.I think this is a good democratic option.
