Gulf fishing gear ban for 3 months

The Fisheries Department will ban destructive fishing gear in parts of the Gulf of Thailand during the spawning season.

Department chief Wimol Chanthararothai said the ban, which is among the department's measures to manage marine resources, will take effect from Friday until May 15. It will cover 26,400 sq km of sea in parts of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon and Surat Thani.

Violators could face a fine of up to 10,000 baht and/or a jail term of up to one year, Mr Wimol said.
