Obec readies for next round of tablet buying

Contracts for 1.8 million devices up for grabs

The Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) will organise an electronic auction to procure about 1.8 million tablet computers next month, pending cabinet approval.

The devices will be distributed to Prathom 1 (Grade 1) and Mathayom 1 (Grade 7) students when the next school term starts in May, Obec secretary-general Chinnapat Bhumirat said.

He said his office would stage the auction to procure tablet computers on behalf of seven other education organisations.

Some private universities now require the first year students to buy a genuine iPad. The students have become addicted to them. I hear complaints that they even play games in the classroom. So much for education.

As a teacher in Bangkok, what we need is a computer in every class room with a projector, and Internet that the teacher has total control over, the students have enough to distract them from listening to us as it is, giving them their own computers will be giving them one more reason not to pay attention to the teacher
