Terror threat spurs security alert

US consulate in Chiang Mai under close watch

The government has ordered that security be beefed up for the US consulate in Chiang Mai following intelligence reports of a potential terrorist attack.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung says he has received information that al-Qaeda and Salafist terrorists had planned to launch a three-pronged attack on the US consulate in an operation codenamed "Billiard Ball" in the first half of February.

Chalerm should be elected head of Home Land Security because he knows more than those winks do. The world could sleep easy knowing he is in charge.

In another Thai English printed newspaper, Khun Chalerm is quoted as saying he "sniffed out the threat of an attack." Now THAT calls for more ear medicine.

The article in The Nation is even funnier
"On Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung claimed he’d had a "sniff" of terrorism-related activities in Chiang Mai."

"However, any US Citizen with an urgent matter should notify the guard for entry, or return between 1:30 and 3:30 on those days."

Giving the "potential terrorists" the specific hours during which you will most likely be busy may not be the smartest thing to do. Or it's a thinly disguised trap. Given the incompetence of the terrorists last year in Bangkok, though, this might work.

Interesting that the only news about this is coming from Chalerm and company, nothing from the US government. And no warnings for US citizens in Thailand.

Strange that the warning is from Thai Government and nothing at all on the US Embassy website.

Discussion 4. It said the drugs gangs were based in Australia. It didn't say it got the rocket launchers there. It would be very easy to come over here and get hold of them.

Billiard Ball? Really? Kind of a break from the usual Al-Qaeda codename genre of kill all the infidels. I somehow think this is going to work out for the terrorists as well as the Iranian bomb throwers.

"grenade launchers and C-4 charges provided by drug traders based in Australia" What!!!Australia??? Where is the Deputy PM getting this info from? How were they shipped out of one the most protected borders in the world? How did they get them in the 1st place???? Its an island. Its a beat upto look good. This is all too silly for words. Agree with you meme

Perhaps Chalerm learnt from the last time he received a terrorist warning.

"Iranian terrorist cell operating in Pattaya and Bangkok suspected of building bombs."

"Nonsense!" cried Chalerm... "There are no terrorists in Thailand!... What's that booming sound outside in the street?"
