16 die in attack on Thai marine base

Scores of heavily armed gunmen stormed a military base in the southern border province of Narathiwat on Wednesday morning, an army spokesman said, in a major assault that left at least 16 militants dead.

"About 80 fully armed militants stormed the base, where there were 60 marines," said Col Pramote Promin, spokesman for the 4th Region Forward Command of the Internal Security Operations Command.

Agreed with dharma. No doubt they got what they deserved, but until the underlying issues are resolved, there will sympathy for violent response to the Thais' domination of the region. The fact that the Thais insist on ruling the annexed region with their "one nation, one language, one religion" idealogy, there will be resentment to the way they unjustly rule the region. The Phillippines recently agreed to home-rule for the Malay-Muslim region in their domain. Let's hope Thailand can find the humanity to do the same.

"What a difference a day makes!". Well done Thai forces. Three militant leaders killed, good! This will put a bit of fear and uncertainty into the remainder. Well done by the informers for giving accurate information and not supporting the militants. Intelligence officers keep on working, don't rest until more are brought to justice. I might sound callous in my post because people were killed, but sorry, they were terrorists not people!

Well, a lot of triumphalism on the board tonight. No doubt the insurgents deserved what they got if they instigated an attack... I look forward to more information being published. I don't support violent efforts to achieve secession, but a lot the pc warriors would be surprised to know of the widespread community support that separatists receive in the wider Pattani region. Do some basis research and you will understand why. Language, culture, religious, family ties are hard to break; and rest assured that locals in Pattani won't be reading the Bkk Post version of what went down. The Thai military is trying to win the wrong hearts and minds.

Reuters News service, The Daily Beast and numerous other international media confirm that the 60 radical revolutionaries are Islamic jihadists whose sole intent is to force Islam on Thailand and establish Shariah law that has no foundation in the Qu'ran (it is the Hadith). These extremists are confident they will go to their heaven to be with Allah and his three daughters: el-Lat, el-Uzza, and Manat (Qu'ran sura 53:19-20 and 17:73-75) and unlimited virgins. Hopefully the Thai military will help these radical murderers to reach their heaven quickly, as they believe that their god commissions their murder of innocent people.

Political and religious radicals deserve no mercy. It is irrelevant if the would be butchers are militant Muslims or evangelical extremists following the New Apostolic Reformation that festers in contemporary Christianity, or a political ploy to bring down a government. They have no respect for life, and thus have no right to life: a life for a life. Well done, marines. Shoot before being shot, and protect the people.

I've been saying all along, the Thai Military is an outstanding fighting force. The important thing is, these Thai-Marines were ready and prepared for the attack. Although intelligence is good, we still should be ready and prepared 24/7. It's time now to take the fight to the insurgents.

Regarding Disc 1, Ghandi's anti violence philosophy ........I thank you. By the likes outweighing the dislikes, it has proven to me that the majority of readers prefer a non violent solution the problem in the South. It is undoubted that the pen is mightier than the sword. I sincerely hope that this tactic can be used to an effective resolution.

Good news but not one wounded militant when they were all wearing bullet proof vests ? . Pretty good shots in the dark.

The Malayans used Dyak headhunters from Borneo who were expert trackers to hunt down the terrorists after raids like this and Gurkhas to continuously patrol in the jungles to take the terrorists night sanctuaries away. Simple and effective.

    Excellent news indeed!
I have waited a long time for this - well done marines - great job.
Hope this will also silence the BP posters who constantly knock Thailand, army, police, general public, etc, but I will not hold my breath!
The initiative is now with the good guys again, keep it up!
