Security forces ready for raid and hunt

Evidence from a dead militant prompted marines to prepare for a raid from southern insurgents in the early hours of Wednesday, which led to heavy losses to the attackers, a naval officer said.

Capt Thammanon Wanna, chief of Narathiwat Task Force 32, said security authorities were on alert for a possible large attack after intelligence analysts found a map of the base and other documents on the body of Suhaidee Tahe, a 31-year-old militant killed last Saturday.

Suhaidee was already on the most-wanted list of southern militants, as officials believed he was involved in the notorious murder of school teacher Chonlatee Charoenchon, shot to death in front of students and staff at the Ban Tanyong School canteen in Bacho district, Narathiwat, on Jan 23.

Associated Press is reporting 30 militants attacked and 16 dead. "Authorities confiscated 13 rifles, three pistols and a pickup truck at the scene."

First Kudos to Marines, second ,what is the message the government wants to send to future insugents? If you get kill we will send endolences and financially support to their surviving family?I would join militant group if I know my family will be taken care of if I die. The MESSAGE should be you get kill no one will take care of your family. treat insurgents as terrorists.

Some of the information here seems odd and disingenuous. This almost sounds like a well organized paramilitary force, certainly not the drug dealers and hoodlums that Chalerm likes to blame. I doubt we'll ever get a truly accurate story about this.

The marines did good which is a reflection of their military training. These situations need to be dealt with by trained military personnel, guided by their superior officers. Now the insurgents have a clear message that the Thai military is ready and prepared to deal with them good and proper so they will either give up the fight or wait and recruit & train more insurgents. Either way the people in the south and the military need to be alert for revenge attacks anyway. The pathologists and DNA experts now need to check all the dead bodies to confirm their identities, and if they catch any wounded survivors to gather more information.

Divide the reward amongst the Marines, equally without reward for rank. They deserve it, not some general.

"About 60 attackers... arrived at the marine base in (only) two pickups and two motorcycles." I find the logistics of this a bit hard to believe but I guess it's possible. Maybe 26 insurgents per truck and 4 per motorcycle? But if the insurgents were so well equipped with M16s, AK47s, military combat fatigues and bullet proof vests, you'd think they could commandeer another truck or something.

It was a tip off from locals according to another report which quoted a colonel.. So what was it? intelligence gathered by the army, or a tip off from locals?
