Death zone awaited unsuspecting raiders

A group of 50 militants approached a marine base in Narathiwat's Bacho district early Wednesday to launch a surprise attack, unaware that they were entering a death zone.

Narathiwat Task Force 32 knew in advance of the planned attack on their base. Fifty marines led by Cdr Thammanoon Wanna, the task force commander, were poised for action.

"My men and I waited for days.

Families of the dead insurgents arrived on Wednesday to retrieve the bodies. Many said they had no idea the dead men were involved with the violent southern insurgency.

Right. Only a fool would believe that.
If the military is smart they would go search all the homes of the family members. Arrest them wouldn't be a bad idea too.

Where and how did they get their weapons? And did any of them carry identification?

D#7 interesting point raised. How did the families know? Were these terrorist, hell bent on murdering every soldier on the base carrying their Thai ID's? Sorry all family members must be suspect. They did not know !!!!!

Well, a lot of triumphalism on the board (again). No doubt the insurgents deserved what they got if they instigated an attack... I look forward to more information being published. I don't support violent efforts to achieve secession, but a lot the pc warriors would be surprised to know of the widespread community support that separatists receive in the wider Pattani region. Do some basic research and you will understand why. Language, culture, religious, family ties are hard to break; and rest assured that locals in Pattani won't be reading the Bkk Post version of what went down. The Thai military is trying to win the wrong hearts and minds.

Khun Robins #6, the Israelis have to go to that extreme because they are dealing with suicide-bombers, in order to discourage them from blowing themselves up among the Israelis. The Palestinian terrorists have to go to such extreme because it is the only way to get inside Israel. But in the Deep South, the terrorists can go home after finishing their evil deeds with near immunity until yesterday's ambush when they walked into the Marines' deadly trap. The Americans and the Israelis have been using with good effect a combination of drones and attack helicopters to mop up those who survive their ambush and are fleeing, especially at night.

Families of the dead insurgents arrived on Wednesday to retrieve the bodies. Strange they know where to come and get the bodies so quickly, if they didn't know what they were doing?

Too bad the Marines could not kill or catch all of them. These people have resorted to killing teachers, blowing up hotels and burning schools, perhaps the Israeli approach of bulldozing their family homes wold be more appropriate than politely handing over the bodies.

Khun MarkGM #2, yes, that precisely how we won and kept the peace in the Deep South for so long, until TS messing it all up, by abolishing the Independent Intel Agency, hoping to save a few Baht. By the time he realized his colossal mistake, it was too late as the terrorists were crawling all over the place. His attempt to contain the situation at Tak-Bai & Krue-Se, using fear and intimidation, backfired big time, and the rest is history, which is still unfolding in the most violent way imaginable.

Disc 3, thaidiver......These civilian people, especially teachers have suffered a lot....Some encouragement would be better than a message of impending doom.
