So in response to bombing, beheading and butchery, Thailand should stop all use of state violence - no military, and the police should get foam night sticks. How cool would that be? Peace will blossom. What a vision!

Howiwish: I believe you were one of those who said state violence "never" works against separatists slash terrorists. You were comparing, not me. It has worked. So far as Thailand (and Iraq): as the man says, my balls are not made of crystal. But so far as the US and Canada, it has worked a treat. Both are still one country because of MASSIVE, murderous and unrelenting state violence, and only because of that.

Donduck, in many of your points you are hanging onto poor information. Please do not compare the situation in Iraq to that of Thailand, as the origins of both situations are totally different! International force has been used in both Iraq and Afghanistan, neither country has been won by the International forces, the national government or the militants (Al-queada of Taleban). War is still raging in both, with Iraq still being sectariant, with Sunni killing Shia and Shia killing Sunni. This is still happening everyday, and one of the main reasons why U.S.A. withdrew, their firepower couldn't get the results they hoped.

The fugitive started this war in the south and now when his regime is back the violence is skyrocketing. When will the families of all the victims of the south receive their 7.5 million baht?

Of course force works, but, it doesn't happen overnight. Slowly their lose their commanders, through death, capture, and old age! money dries up, weapons fail. The government needs to go after the money and the supplies. IED's can be made, but, who are they killing? The locals! The soft targets, after they failed to get the Marines. Eventurely the locals will become entrenched, refuse to keep handing over money and support. They will make them sit down and talk, the government must make sure that door is open, but inist the come as one group.

donduck sorry but where do you get your information from about Northern Ireland force did not work.It was not until negotiation started that a calm was achieved, you still unfortunately have the thugs who will never give up but even they are being forced out by the majority wanting peace.
Iraq unfortunately needed a dictator like Sadanm to control the country that America did not understand. They have replaced a bad regime by another corrupt one.Back to square one. Force has not achieved anything there.

This is the way the militants respond to the decision of NO curfews, they decide to go out at the first opportunity to show all that, 1. Their not afraid of the Military, 2. Their still in control and can terrorise and plant IED's at will, 3. They still have locals protecting them.

Rarely do you find so many right ideas and thoughts commented on a BP article. The point is that whatever needs to be done, has to be initiated by a whole hearted effort by the government. It controls resources, policies and finance - it cannot keep blaming the past for the present mess. I see the determined violence in the south, I notice that it has largely been restricted to the South territories. Do these people have something to say, are they being unjustly treated, is the media really free to talk. Is Chalerm the right guy for this job if yes, then should he spending more time in the south. Answers Pretty PM, we wait.

Disc 21, donduck.......I would like to bring up again a famous saying from Mahatma Ghandi........ "I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent." How would you agree with that ? Moreover would the survivors of the dead from violence agree to this.
The solution to the South of Thailand is with talks and negotiations. NOT violence.

donduck, I disagree. Iraq is still one country, but the violence is as bad as ever. the insurgents are not tiring of it.
the IRA did not just "give up". It was the realisation on the british goverment's part that force wasn't working, which led to a political solution: semi-autonomy. the place has been largely peaceful ever since. as for the US, just have a look at how it gained independence from britain. it is now 10 years since the southern thailand insurgency began. has military force worked? or would you say that the situation has got worse?

smithy The statement was that force "never" puts down this sort of militancy and violence. The fact is that it has done so hundreds of times. Iraq is still one country. So is the US. So is Thailand. So is Canada. So is (ahem) Britain. If you think force wasn't used in all of these countries and dozens more, you are not informed. The separatists pretty well always quit, give up, and sue for peace BECAUSE they cannot defeat the force used against them. The continuing violence in Iraq (and Thailand) only means the separatists haven't yet given up, not that they will win.
