Long-haul buses to have TVs in seats

The Transport Co plans to install multi-media monitors on passengers' seats on inter-city buses, a deputy transport minister said.

Deputy Transport Minister Prasert Chanruangthong said the plan is under discussion with a private operator, who is putting up the money, seeing it as a business opportunity because bus services carry around 40 million passengers a year.

The monitors would be installed on 24-seat VIP inter-city buses and 32-seat air-conditioned buses on journeys of 200km or more, he said.

D5:"This will at least help occupy the passenger's minds while the bus driver race on."

Yes, they could play soothing music like 'Ride of the Valyries' or 'Bat out of Hell'

They'd better invest in GPS systems to monitor the bus driver's driving habits.

D1: hear-hear, but where's the profit in that?

"seeing it as a business opportunity" - That raises the fear that these multi-media monitors, like the ones in the BTS/MRT/Tesco-Lotus and many other places, will be used to inflict loud and compulsory advertising on passengers for at least part of the journey.

The investor will have right to all advertisements on condition of maintaining the same fares.
10 mins of movie 5 mins of ads

Will there be English and Thai movies and music?

I think the money would be better spent installing seat belts and improving the standard of driver training.
