Former defence secretary 'unusually rich'

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has resolved to freeze about 65 million baht of assets held by Gen Sathian Permthong-in, a former defence permanent secretary, his wife and their adopted daughter after concluding that the retired general is unusually wealthy and had made a false declaration of assets and liabilities.

The decision was announced on Tuesday by Vicha Mahakhun, a member of the NACC.

According to Mr Vicha, the NACC found Gen Sathian committed two offences.

POINTMN D14: You are in a certain sense right. If you think about some places like Africa and others in the third world's far reaches.

But Thailand makes claims to be part of the modern, progressive democratic world. It is this deception that makes the corruption so blatant.

And I woud suggest the people in position of being able to take bribes and so forth would be hard put to find someone not on the take.

The fact is in Thailand you cannot move up the ladder unless you play that game.

Does Thailand want to be like Zululand ora modern democracy? It is trying to play it both ways. The MSM needs to come out of hiding.

Several have pointed out that these people are on the currently "wrong side" of the Democrat/PTT side. Fine. The PTT will not be in power forever, and there will power struggles within PTT. When the worms turns, those on the PTT side will also have to face the music. I general and authorities need to realize this. Foreign business interests that have "protectors" in the Thai government need to realize this. These protectors are increasingly becoming liabilities. Lets hope we see more of this naming and shaming.

'Mr Rakkiat was the first former cabinet minister to have been sentenced to jail, receiving 15 years imprisonment for corruption in the procurement of medical equipment and medicines'.
It should be pointed out that Mr. Rakkiat was released on parole after serving less than five years in prison.

On Feb 26, 2010, the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions found former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra guilty of being unusually wealthy and ordered the seizure of 46 billion baht from the amount he received from selling shares of Shin Corp, as requested by the NACC.
It did start somewhere before but look at the turmoil it caused. :

Bangon - "facts_only: PS it's quite weird your posts generally get a number of 'Likes' which is quite opposite to the general trend on the topic..."

facts_only, aka johninbkk readily admits to organizing and controlling the reds on these boards. At least in private.

facts_only: PS it's quite weird your posts generally get a number of 'Likes' which is quite opposite to the general trend on the topic... Do you switch off/on that many times to get the score in your favour that you want, or are 'befriended' people asked to help you getting it? It's a mystery to me, the more so because the BP site's supervisors obviously never got a hitch from it... Can you please provide some information, only facts of course, no propaganda???

Good to see the NACC doing their job and naming the culprits. Isn't this what everyone wants?

drsmith 13 - "I am pretty sure a government salary won't pay for a Pink Bentley."
The salary of a MP is 110k baht/month. 27 month's salary is 3 million baht.

The owner of the Pink Bentley is a Deputy Prime Minister and makes a salary above that.

Gen Sathian Permthong-in was appointed by the Democrat party during a military reshuffle in mid-2010. Supot Saplom, a Democrat Party member, was the former transport permanent secretary under Abhisit. Rakkiat Sukthana was a former Health Minister under the Democrat coalition-led government of Chuan Leekpai.

Did BangkokPost intentionally leave out this information?

He invested it in the Thammasat co-op? Since when are generals allowed to belong? It is only for students, faculty and employees. The shares programme does pay about 10% interest, which is nice - if you can't get into it. (Foreign lecturers cannot.)
