NACC freezes Sathian's assets

Ex-defence permanent secretary 'unusually rich'

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has frozen about 65 million baht worth of assets held by former defence permanent secretary Gen Sathian Permthong-in and three others, after declaring the retired officer unusually wealthy.

Gen Sathian Permthong-in waves as he drives away on Tuesday after learning that millions of baht in his bank accounts have been frozen on suspicion he is "unusually wealthy".

The decision was announced Tuesday by Vicha Mahakhun, an NACC member.

If amounts have been transfered into his bank accounts these should be easily traced. So the NACC will then know the sources of deposits? They've discovered the transfers out and the other 'assets' of question. Any smart person in the western world would make up the story he won it at the track, a lottery win, or on a on-line casino. But somehow I don't think those stories will pass here.

Transferred to an inactive post, again...Ok, fair enough that the guy is yet to be convicted, but can someone please explain what exactly you need to do to get fired from the police / army / civil service here?

It is high time politicians and government employees (inculding police and military) above a certain (relatively low) rank should be required to submit assets declarations annually, with a proportion - say 10% - being subject to random audit. It is perfectly possible to have an IT based declaration process which would not be too time consuming to reconcile income less expenses to assets/libaility changes and highlight abnormalities for further review and explanation. If people want power they must be prepared to accept some inconvenience to demonstrate they are not abusing it for financial gain

    Diss 17
There has to be a way for corruption to be exposed anonymously so people don't have to fear being killed as the activist was yesterday near Chonburi .The internet and social media can be a powerful tool but the key is to present information for all to see .I believe when it is exposed enough the shame factor will kick in .

So what can we do? What can we do today? Can I go stand in front of his house and protest? Will the media start to show my protest on TV for everyone to see? We all are tired of this, but what can we do?

Disc 8: unlike Thailand U.K.or U.S. Generals are not in business for themselves whilst also serving in the military. Many Thai Generals are running "security services" and doing all manner of criminal activities whilst wearing a uniform full of more medals than the Joint Chiefs of both the U.K. and U.S.combined.I think they just award themselves the colourful decorations.Look at how many of them go into politics, that other lucrative occupation. How the Thai citizen has any respect for their armed forces is unbelievable.
If a U.K. or U.S. General was found to be involved in external business they would be drummed out.

I believe most people hate like corruption but also know if they speak out the police will do nothing to protect them .There has to be a 100% mind shift to the point where the criminal is the one who is scared not the victims .

It's disgusting how much corruption there is in Thailand and how little reaction to it there is by the people and how little action is taken to stop it by those with any sort of voice or power. 80% of higher-up police officers and military leaders in Thailand are corrupt in my view. They have to be with so much wrong done by those below them.

D7 As you point out that most politicians use their position in the majority to persecute their opponents. Happens on both sides and of course neither side goes after their own lackeys. You ask what side the general was on? and the answer is the same for all of them. They are on the side that produces the most money for themselves. In Asia being a politician is merely a tool for wealth building. There are numerous ways to use the power of office for status, inside information and self gain, which is the primary motivator for them to go into politics. Being a general means he can play both sides.
