Govt to boost infrastructure spending to B4 trillion

The government will double its budget for infrastructure development over the next seven years to 4 trillion baht, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Kittiratt Na-Ranong says.

Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt answers questions from the media about the plan to build four high-speed railway lines and 10 new regular railways.

Mr Kittiratt, however, said that sum will only be enough to finance major transport routes within the master plan.

What the heck, another 2 trillion Baht, this borrowing thing worked so well for Greece, Italy and Spain, what can possibly go wrong? How long is this insanity going to be allowed to continue?

D 2 - If you followed the high speed train story you would know that one of the conditions outside contractors must adhere to, is to manufacture the trains in Thailand. Yes the contractors will have their own people, but they will still create jobs in Thailand. Doesn't matter who gets the contract as long as its transparent, the trains are safe and efficient. This week it was also announced that Singpore will link up with KL via high speed trains. One day we will be able to travel in one day from Singapore to China via train.

Well in line with ADB and World Bank recommendation. Thailand hasn't done much on improving infrastructure last decade and we are falling behind other peers in terms of logistic efficiency. There is no better time to implement the projects than now when the external factors are still very soft and will be for quite some time especially EU. Domestic stimulation will balance the weak external environment and we should have no problem attracting funds through bonds. As the Minister said, transparency must be maintain at all stage of implementation and is vital to gain people trust.

One advice Master Minister Transport, a high speed train needs to go straight. It can bend slightly on long distances but not like soi streets with 90 degree corners. It needs also 'good' concrete and engineers, not the 'modified' concrete used currently for roads, which, after a few years, break and make holes... Good luck to be transparent on that - 2 trillion is quite a lot after all... but you can ask China, because you are pro-Chinese anyway, and they copied already technology from Siemens and Alstom, so they can do it for you now. But they will bring their own engineers and workforce, and overview the work, like they do in Africa.
