Sombat cleared in unusual wealth case

'Nominee' linked to Sathian not to blame

A senior academic had done nothing wrong in the "unusual wealth" case involving former defence permanent secretary Gen Sathian Permthong-in, an investigator said yesterday.

Sombat Chanthornwong, a political science lecturer at Thammasat University, was not guilty of wrongdoing, National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) member Vicha Mahakhun said.

Mr Vicha told the Bangkok Post yesterday that Mr Sombat is only a witness in the case as he is a "nominee", holding the assets on behalf of Gen Sathian's wife and daughter.

Who is who?? Is it Mr Sombat or Mr.Somsak? As a lecturer at Thammasat University I expected more intelligence from him.

There are many "Sombat" in Thailand, so this is just one of them.

"He said he withdrew money from the account 15 or 16 times and returned most of it to Ms Nichapat."
Most is a very flexible quantity.

The NACC said Mr. Somsak was only a nominee. Of course it's an every day occurrence that one of your students asks you to hold half a million dollars, and you graciously take it and stash it in a bunch of different accounts. Then they get it later and make a 50% profit on "land sales" It sure seems to me, and any one over the age of 15 and a modicum of common sense, that he was an active participant in a money laundering effort. That the good professor didn't see it says volumes about the Thai education system.

"Mr Somsak said he had no idea whether the money given to him was legally acquired or not", so why didn't he ask then?
