Vietnamese Buddha image draws ire

A picture of a golden Buddha image sitting on a lotus throne and hugging a naked woman sitting on his lap, photographed in Vietnam, has drawn criticism from Buddhists in the social media, reports said on Thursday.

Attention, Netizens! If you find this rather beautiful statue alarming, disturbing or in any way hateful, then please, please, please, do not, on any account, Google for "Tantric Buddhism/images”.

The shock might actually kill you.

OK. You rejected my previous two comments. So be it. What we are looking at here is a very fine iconic sculpture, in a formalistic style that is widely accepted and admired and recognized (outside of the Thai Netizen community) as symbolizing a main deity and its Shakti, or energy, in a conjoined posture. The deity in question is most probably Samantabhadra, regarded as chief of the Bodhisattvas, and who has blue skin. The posture is indeed Yab-Yum. It is reasonably prevalent in Tibetan and Nepalese and other Mahayana Buddhist art, but this specific example probably is Vietnamese, based on a Tibetan/Nepalese original design.

This Tibetan statue would disturb many Vietnamese Buddhists as well if they know where it is because Vietnam mainly practice Mahayana or Theraveda .

This looks like ancient Tibetan style. This must be in some unknown museum somewhere but not in a Temple because Vietnamese are not Tibetan Buddhists.

"The poster said the picture was taken in Vietnam but did not specify the location of the country."

Let me help... It's on the other side of Cambodia.

Poor Gautama Buddha! At least, this one has nothing to do with toilet covers.

D2: I do not see what my comment about HRW has to do with the one I made here. For me, all offences to religions, religious images, icons, sentiments is a nasty thing. That is what I meant.

Hugo disc 1 - on the one hand admonishes Human Rights Watch for 'making demands' and 'interfering in the business of a sovereign nation' (previous story) when they demand that action be taken against the killers of the environmental activist, and on the other hand appears to condone such condemnations when they come from the religious community and refer to a statue. Bizarre logic indeed.

    That is nasty.
