New cameras to catch speed demons

After a two-month test of high-tech cameras on two expressways in Bangkok, police this week have begun citing motorists caught speeding by the devices.

The high-defintion cameras were also placed along Burapha Withi and Bang Phli-Suksawat expressways, just outside Bangkok, according to the Traffic Division of Metropolitan Police Bureau.

The cameras are able to catch sharp images of speeding vehicles day and night. They provide "eye witness" backup of details of cars and trucks exceeding the speed limit.

Will this stop the so called on the spot fines from HighwayP saying you exceed the speed limit without ANY proof showing the speed limit was broken?

This has been tried before in many other cities and the major issue is that there is no guarantee that the registered owner was actually the one driving the vehicle at the time. Unless there is a way to actually identify the driver then this is another knee jerk reaction to an ongoing problem. Maybe they should spend some time making sure the driver of the Taxi that picks you up is the same person that appears on the license in the front window, if there is one.

So the cameras will record the speeding and maybe the authorities will send tickets to the car owners and then? Will anybody loose his or her driving license? I just read in another article that you can drive too fast, kill a policeman, run away and still walk around free. So what exactly is the point of recording any wrongdoings?
