Core Asean principles 'block gains'

Two of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (Asean) fundamental principles are blocking human rights work, says Thailand's former representative to Asean's human rights commission.

Sriprapa Phetmeesri, a former member of the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), said the consensus principle and the principle of non-interference have slowed down the commission's ability to improve the human rights situation in Asean countries.

Ms Sriprapa recently completed her three-year term at the commission.
