Dems to boycott amnesty talks

The Democrat Party will not attend a discussion of a proposed new amnesty bill on Monday, spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut said on Saturday.

Mr Chavanond said his party stood firm on its stance to oppose any move to seek amnesty for those facing criminal prosecution or accused of insulting the high institution.

The Democrats would agree only to amnesty for those facing charges of violating emergency decrees imposed during political unrest, he said.

I oppose any amnesty bill that includes Abhisit, Suthep and the generals who carried out the coup and whoever is responsible for attacking and kiling unarmed demonstrators.

As far as TS goes he can stay where he is, I could care less.

Unless there is accountability for once in Thailand during such a time of confrontations the risk is big coups and more such violence will occur as the ones responsible know they will always get off the hook.

    @Eric d3 and peterl d6.

Is it unreasonable that the DP asks for only 1 bill to be proposed, instead of a whole bunch of different ones? Do the 2 of you know the difference between them. No, thought so, the rest of Thailand probably doesn't either. How can people make decisions on something so muddy and confusing. Is PTP hoping that noone will notice a small "save Thaksin" clause hidden in one of the proposals?
Make one bill, make it clear that the proposal will not cover Thaksin, Suthep or Abhisit or any seriouss criminals such as murderers, arsonists etc., and the DP will sign.
But then again, such a bill is not really what PTP wants ri

If an honest justice system arrested, tried and convicted all guilty parties irreguardless of whom then there would be no need for amnesty talks at all. The problem is equal justice for all.

Is amnesty and/or reconciliation important to anyone else than those who are currently in jail or facing charges. Ie. a few thousand people? As far as I know, the other 60 million Thais couldn't care less. They go about their daily lives, and their relatinship to their neighbours are not going to change one bit, just because the law is changed.
If it is indeed only to get a small group of criminals out of jail, then perhaps the bills do not have to be at the top of every agenda?

    Disc 3 Eric...
"Mr Chavanond said his party stood firm on its stance to oppose any move to seek amnesty for those facing criminal prosecution or accused of insulting the high institution."

These are principles... Try them some time.

The Dems at their best. What they have shown is that what they are best at is boycotting, and causing trouble in Parliament, and attacking people.

The moment you trust or lower your defence with the reds or with any PT MP. you will receive a knife in your back or an bomb in your face..I have to agree 300% with discussion 7... this proposition smells bad, very bad... it smells like....Dubai???

D7 : Spot on! No point for the Dems to participate just to repeat their stance on this issue.

"Dems will boycott amnesty talks". So many other issues, Dems seem to favor talks. For example, the Southern violence, Dems prefer talks to escalation of, curfews or more violence; Dems seem to prefer talks rather than red-shirt/UDD demonstrations. Why can't they at least participate in talks about an amnesty issue? Even if they were unanimously against any amnesty, at least show up and make their reasons known at the talks, not through remarks to the press.

The draft legislation for a broad amnesty was signed by 42 Pheu Thai MPs. What does this fact tell us?
If this would be about genuine reconciliation then the PT MPs would have talked to the opposition and other non-parliamentarian political groups to find a compromise before they submitted that document to the house speaker.
Almost any group including the DEMs wants a law which gives amnesty to normal protesters who did nothing else than protest peacefully. A law like that could be passed in no time. But this is obviously not what the PT and red-shirts want. They want amnesty for a lot more than just some peaceful protesters.
