Saudi continues ban on Thai workers

Saudi Arabia’s ban on Thai workers remains in place, with its interior ministry rejecting a Saudi labour ministry request to resume recruitment of maids from Thailand.

Diplomatic relations between Thailand and Saudi Arabia have been strained since the “blue diamond” affair of 1989, when a Thai janitor working in the Riyadh palace of Prince Faisal stole close to 100kg of jewellery, including a fabulous blue diamond.

    Saudi Arabia wants two things
the people who stole the jewels from the police station (a crime) caught and punished
the people who killed the Saudi diplomats caught and punished
until then no guest workers (lots of money sent to Thailand)and a trickle of Saudi tourists (no big spending tourists)

any other argument is just avoiding those two hard truths

Thailand should sanction Saudi Arabia up one side and down the other. The despotic, global-terrorist coddling, US-partner in crime has committed atrocities worldwide and at home for decades, including fueling the Libyan and now Syrian bloodbaths with sectarian extremists hand-in-hand with the US, UK, EU, and Israel. It's real indictment on the illegitimacy of so-called "international law" when the UN allows nations like Iran to be starved to death, and Saudi Arabia to mass-murder and brutalize at home and abroad with absolute impunity.

The Saudi ban is nothing but a blessing for Thai women. Better stay away from that hell hole.

We only have ourselves to blame. After what the Saudis went through with the Blue Diamond Fiasco with the Thai Police Dept, who can blame them for not wanting another repeat?

It's not a good idea for Thailand to allow workers to go to Saudi Arabia based upon the experiences of similar workers from other countries (Sri Lanka and Indonesia). Besides, Thailand doesn't even have an embassy there to protect the worker's rights - not that having an embassy there matters any.

Where is the blue diamond? I heard it was in an 'untouchable' place... Saudis, don't sell oil to Thailand until you can claim what was stolen from...

    A good thing too.

SA is one of the most reprehensible countries on earth, with the most reprehensible people, especially the men.

This Saudi boycott most have costed Thailand lots of billions. Having Thai police returning copys of the jewels to Saudi and then quickly return to Thailand........Major misstake.

You're in a far better place than you would be if not banned--For sure.
