Army warns villagers to stay away from training grounds

The death of a 12-year-old boy after a mortar round explosion in Sa Kaeo province has prompted the army to warn people not to sneak into its training areas.

The boy, whose name was withheld, died on Sunday after dropping an 81mm mortar round which exploded as it hit the ground.

The child was collecting spent ammunition near a water reservoir located on the 12th Infantry Regiment's shooting range in Wattha Nakhon district of this central province.

If the army cannot keep people off a live firing range during training exercises, on the border with Cambodia no less, then the army is not really capable of much at all.
