Cites votes to curb trade in 'phayung'

Thailand and Vietnam's joint proposal to restrict international trade in phayung, or Siamese rosewood, was adopted by consensus at the international meeting on wildlife protection in Bangkok yesterday.

The adoption of the proposal to list the phayung tree (Dalbergia cochinchinensis), logs, sawn wood and veneer sheets, in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) followed heavy lobbying of China to support the listing.

China is a leading importer of phayung wood and most of the illegal phayung timber seized in Thailand is destined for China, Thai authorities claim.
