Thailand, Laos back new bridge

VIENTIANE - Thailand and Laos agreed on Wednesday to build another bridge linking the countries across the Mekong River.

A ceremony in December began the final stages of construction of the fourth bridge between the North of Thailand and Laos. China funded half the construction costs. (Picture by Khaosane Pathet Lao News Agency)

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Lao Premier Thongsing Thammavong supported in principle the new international link planned to span the Mekong from Bung Kan province in the Northeast to the Lao province of Borikhamxay. The leaders agreed to assign agencies to conduct a feasibility study.

I, for one, am very happy that the Aranya to Poipet railway is to be restored. It would be even better if the line from Aranya to Bangkok was also improved, perhaps to dual tracks and to be strong-enough to carry goods/freight thus relieving the roads somewhat.
Many of the lorries pounding along the Suwanasorn Road are 18-wheelers (10 + trailer) or larger, which suggests there is a huge tonnage of goods to-and-from Bangkok. If each of these carries a mere 20-tonnes and there are perhaps a hundred per day, that suggest a not-to-be-sneazed-at 2000 tonnes from which the railway could profit.
Now run the odd tourist steam-excursion or three..

The BKK-Nong Kai line now (and has for some time) connects over the bridge to Vientiane.

D#1 Absolutely correct, but our PM isn't the brightest light bulb in the room if you know what I mean.

Railway tracks? Don't the nearest tracks terminate at Chiang Mai, some 200kms away?
