Thai shrimp farming industry under fire

Thailand’s multi-billion dollar shrimp industry has been fiercely criticised in an article published by one of the world’s most popular news websites.

Writing for Britain's MailOnline – which registered a record 126,753,431 global monthly unique browsers in January – journalist Jim Wickens said he would “never eat a king prawn again” after observing Thailand’s shrimp trade.

Ploydonut, the reason people complain and write about Thailand, is to educate Thai's, because it is usually true!

"journalist Jim Wickens said he would “never eat a king prawn again” after observing Thailand’s shrimp trade." Who cares! Keep consuming the processed foods and you thought you were eating food back home! and I don't need to start.

"Wickens claims to have gone undercover to witness the faults of Thailand’s shrimp industry, going to unusual lengths to gain access to fishing trawlers." This report is a crap especially when it is issued from a propagandist. I really hate it when such a journalist write such a report and totally forgot the devastation agony of the food industry in his home country.

Awaiting the government official to deny and deflect the story.

Next the slander lawsuit. No reason not to sue in the UK court if the points alleged can be disproven.

While the details from Wickens is certainly plausible, it's unclear how widespread. In any case I wouldn't take this newspaper very seriously, with their agenda-driven drivel aimed at as wider audience of low IQ readers in Britain and elsewhere, as possible. This sensationalist stuff makes them the biggest site in the world, outdoing the Sun and News of the World in tastelessness. It's not the first time they've trashed Thailand.

Journalist Jim Wickens most probably has written the truth. He now should dig into the Horsemeat scandal in England, and write for the Britain's Mail on Line what he found overthere.

Taiwan was one of the largest exporters of shrimp in the early 90s. They stopped as the shrimp farming is extremely destructive to the natural habitat, most shrimp farms became toxic and were unusable. Hence the entire industry collapse. Thailand is big hence it is still able to support this destructive practice. This article does not mention the farming method, which is destructive if not even more than trawling methods.

Yes we should stop eating Thai prawns, but at the same time stop buying Chinese/Vietnamese/Cambodia/Zimbabwe/Bangladesh products due to bad labour practices. This will mean no more IPhones, TV's, Nike shoes, cheap clothes etc etc. I think it is better to put pressure on the government to improve working conditions and control practices better. If you don't buy the prawns people will loose their jobs and will be worse off than now. Did the program makers asked the people if they would rather be without a job than working like they do at present?

Yes. Finally!! Thank you samesame!! Everyone in Thailand, listen up: Boycott everything that is Thai. Do not buy anything made in Thailand and never NEVER eat food from Thailand.

There. That was easy. One boycott of everything that is Thai, and problem solved. Thanks samesame, it was so simple!

The only way to change this situation is for people to boycote Thai products untill the industries involved are cleaned up and regulated its time for Fair Trade Shrimp.
