Kittiratt: No action to curb baht

It is not necessary for the Ministry of Finance to act to curb the persistent strengthening of the baht at this stage, Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong said on Wednesday.

The minister said he will discuss the state of the currency with the Bank of Thailand (BoT) governor at the meeting of economic ministers later today.

    With two trillion baht (USD 67.5 billion) about to be splashed on 'infrastructure projects', the baht has to be appreciated significantly in order to save costs in foreign exchange. Assuming 75% of the 2T are ear-marked for purchases from abroad, for every baht appreciated against the US dollars, at least 50 billion baht can be saved and put to better use for the economy.
