Van carrying migrants overturns

Fifteen Myanmar people, including a six-year-old boy and a four-month old baby, were injured when a speeding passenger van overturned on Phetkasem road in Ratchaburi's Pak Tho district on Wednesday, police said.

Pol Sub Lt Sutthipan Samkhumpim, a duty officer at Pak Tho police station, said the driver, Malukan Samoh, lost control of the van after its back tyre burst. The vehicle then overturned and plunged into a ditch.

Pol Sub Lt Sutthipan said the van was travelling from Narathiwat to Tak's Mae Sot district with 15 Myanmar migrants who hid in Thailand after being expelled from Malaysia. They were to be sent back to their home country.

... and of those killed, up to 70 or 80 per cent are motorcyclists or their passengers.

Up to 26,000 people get killed in road accidents every year in Thailand.

There is always a reason for a tyre bursting, but before we blame the van driver (whose titles seem to make them popular targets for criticism on this forum) let's remember that there were two vans in a convoy of three vehicles, where the leader was immigration police who wouldn't allow speeding or overloading, would they?
