Govt admits rice scheme debt

Deputy Commerce Minister Nattawut Saikuar has admitted the government's rice pledging scheme is ridden with debt.

Mr Nattawut, however, defended the scheme and said it is helping to stimulate the economy.

The deputy minister was grilled on the scheme in the House yesterday by Democrat MP for Phetchabun, Yuparat Bua-in.

"Such a scheme will be one million percent loss-ridden." I wonder what that means in English.

"Thaksin said during an interview...that the policy reaps economic gains equal to three times the programme's cost."
"The programme will lead to higher government revenue through the sale of stockpiled grain," Thaksin said.

When will they finally admit the "government to government" sales never happened? They have been secret, can't say until next year, not sure of amount, ad naseum. Just admit you haven't sold the rice and ask for help marketing it.

'A million per cent' loss ridden? From the pledging price to the selling price, this government has a problem with basic arithmetic.

"Deputy Commerce Minister Nattawut Saikuar has admitted the government's rice pledging scheme is ridden with debt. Mr Nattawut, however, defended the scheme and said it is helping to stimulate the economy. In principle, the rice pledging scheme is aimed at stabilising the prices of farm products to help farmers,Mr Nattawut said. Such a scheme will be one million percent loss-ridden".

That makes sense...if you're a red shirt. Otherwise,it's utter and complete nonsense.
