Food security 'hit severely by pledging'

The government's rice-pledging scheme has had a severe negative impact on national food security, an academic says. 

Somporn Isvilanonda, a senior researcher at the Knowledge Network Institute of Thailand, said the scheme's high pricing has changed farming practices from focusing on planting high-quality rice to fast-yielding crops.

This will eventually ruin the country's domestic rice varieties, he said.
