The rice pledging scheme may cause a national loss of 500-700 billion baht, offers only short-lived benefits to farmers and is implemented with policy-related corruption which benefits vested interests, a seminar was told Sunsay.
In a discussion on the government's rice pledging scheme in Bangkok, Vichai Sriprasert, honorary president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, said he was concerned about the huge loss of rice exports since the government introduced the scheme.
He said the amount of rice exports has dropped by 4 million tonnes since the pledging scheme began in late 2011. In 2011, rice exports amounted to 10.6 million tonnes and generated 194 billion baht for the nation.
