A veteran activist has expressed concern over a government plan to merge Chiang Mai Zoo with the newly established Pinkanakorn Development Agency.
Thai Wildlife Protection Network secretary-general Nikom Putta said the plan would violate the principles of zoo establishment that focus on animal preservation rather than profit.
Mr Nikom was reacting to Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi's letter submitted on July 4 to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The letter ordered the Zoological Park Organisation's board to discuss the transfer of management of Chiang Mai Zoo to the Pinkanakorn Development Agency.
