Amnesty bill protesters who were stopped by police at the Ratchawithi intersection as they attempted to make their way to parliament hurled abuse and threw water bottles at Pol Lt Gen Khamronwit Thoopkrachang, the metroplitan police chief, who was trying to negotiate with members of the Democrat Party leading the march on Wednesday.
Democrat Party core members including party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, chief adviser Chuan Leekpai, and MP Suthep Thaugsuban asked the police to let their supporters accompany party MPs to parliament to attend a House meeting to consider the controversial Worachai Hema amnesty bill.
"These people want to peacefully march with their MPs to parliament, without causing any trouble to the authorities," said Mr Suthep. "On arriving at parliament, they will disperse and go home.
