PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN
Small-scale fishermen in Prachuap Khiri Khan will gather at the provincial hall today to demand their governor take action against illegal fishing in protected areas.
Piya Tesyaem, president of the Ban Thung Noi Small-Scale Fishermen Association, said yesterday the group had repeatedly lodged complaints with local authorities against the use of destructive fishing equipment in the protected zones.
Under the fishery law, anywhere within 5,400 metres of the shore is considered a marine conservation zone where fishing is prohibited. However, the petitions have fallen on deaf ears and the use of destructive fishing gear, including trawlers and clam-dredgers, was still rampant in the area, Mr Piya said.
