Two men were shot dead and a woman critically injured in two separate shootings in Rueso district of Narathiwat on Monday night, police said.
About 9.51pm, Pol Lt Uthai Phanthong, duty officer at Rueso police station, received a report of a shooting in front of House No 265/1 in Moo 10, tambon Rueso.
He led a joint military and police force to the scene and found Mahama Nasae Samae, 34, a resident of Moo 4 in tambon Rueso, lying dead in front of the house.
Muhammad Kaseng, 48, the dead man's brother-in-law, told police that Mahama Nasae, his sister-in-law Rachana Kuechi, 45, and two neighbours were sitting and chatting in front of the house when two men arrived on a motorcycle.
The driver parked the bike pretending to ask a question and the man riding pillon then produced a gun and fired five shots at them. The assailants then fled.
Mahama Nasae was hit in the head and died on the spot. Rachana was seriously wounded and taken to Rueso hospital.
Police blamed separatist militants.
Another shooting was reported about 10pm inside a mosque at Ban Laloh of Rueso district.
Police said according to witnesses Rusran Wohrong, 32, a resident of Rangae district in Narathiwat, and about 20 other people were praying inside the village mosque. A man who arrived riding pillion on a motorcycle walked into the mosque, pretending he was going to pray behind Rusran.
Instead, the man took out a 9mm handgun, fired four shots at Rusran and then fled. The victim was hit in the head and died on the spot.
Police were investigating.
