A cold spell blanketing much of the country claimed two more lives yesterday.

The latest fatalities came as temperatures are expected to drop by a further three degrees Celsius in many areas.

The chilly weather is believed to have contributed to the deaths of two men, Thawee Wongtao, 41, in Lop Buri and Thanya Saeng-aroon, 37, in Chiang Rai.

Thawee complained about the bitter cold on Sunday night before he was found dead in his house in Muang district of the central province yesterday morning, according to his mother, Prom Wongtao.

Thanya was found dead on a wooden bed on the ground floor of his house in Chiang Rai's Muang district, Pol Col Puwadit Chaiprom of the district police station said.

He was only wearing underwear and had no blanket covering him. There was no trace of a disturbance, police said.

Police suspect he fell asleep under the influence of alcohol and his body was exposed to the harsh winter elements for too long.

The Meteorological Department yesterday forecast that temperatures throughout the country would continue to drop by one to three degrees until Thursday as cold air blowing in from China has extended its ridge across the country.

Tak governor Cherdsak Chusri declared nine districts in the province disaster zones as the mercury dropped to 12C.

The harsh weather claimed the life of a monk in Ayutthaya on Sunday.

Phra Prasert Lamai was found dead in his living quarters in Phak Hai district.

For Anne: On the top right corner of this version is a "click to switch to the old version". That's how you can get the weather forcast. Why it is not on this one is beyond me! I think the webmaster overlooked it!

Maybe the government could stop spending millions of baht on blocking websites and buy some blankets to help save the lives of these poor people.

This is the result of the Global Warning. Everyone of us have to change our habit of live, use less toxic materials and learn how to recycle the waste that we produce everyday. The world's weather is getting worse, as will be cooler in winter and hotter in summer.
