Sunday's charter referendum was a step forward for the country, not a competition to find a winner or loser, National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) spokesman Col Winthai Suvaree said on Wednesday.
Politicians critical of the referendum result were holding the country back, and the people were bored with them and their ways, he said.
The referendum was a step forward on the NCPO's roadmap, with participation from all sectors in society. It was not a competition to find a winner or loser. The outcome reflected the people's voice, which should be respected by one and all, Col Winthai said.
"If politicians continue to make political rhetoric of the referendum for political gain, as they did in the past, they will not only hold the country back, but also bore the people.
"What they say can be seen as showing no respect to the people's opinions. They should adjust their attitude, look at Thai society from various angles, and give factual information based on real circumstance," he added.
Asked about the negative reactions from some countries, including members of the European Union, Col Winthai said many people wondered just how they had reached such conclusions, because they were far away from the real situation.
Those countries might well have have received biased information, he said, and doubted they were ethically impartial.
According to the spokesman, it was evident that during the past two years the NCPO and government had followed every step stipulated in the roadmap. And they would continue to do so, because their real objective was to ensure the utmost benefit for the country and the people.
