Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon on Tuesday denied involvement in the establishment of a pro-military political party announced over the weekend by two Isan activists.

The denial came after Prapas Ngoksoongnern and Saman Sri-ngarm, whose groups advocating the poor and democracy in the Northeast, held a briefing in Nakhon Ratchasima on Sunday to unveil the “People‘s Sovereignty Party”.

The two claimed Lt Gen Tharakit Thabthongsit, the 2nd Army Region commander, represented Gen Prawit as co-founder of the party, reportedly to be a pro-military one.

Responding to reporters’ question, Gen Prawit, who is also defence minister, said he did not know Mr Prapas and Mr Saman and had nothing to do with the new political party.

“They claimed the 2nd Army Region commander represented me. Don’t drag me into this.

Reports said Lt Gen Tharakit were invited to preside over a foundation-stone laying ceremony of King Rama V statue at a learning centre of sufficiency economy philosophy in Sung Noen district on Sunday on behalf of Gen Prawit. The event was held by Mr Prapas.

The two activists announced the establishment of the People‘s Sovereignty Party after Lt Gen Tharakit left.
