Fifteen people have been arrested for allegedly offending the monarchy over the past two weeks since His Majesty the King passed away on Oct 13, a senior police officer said Monday.

Deputy police spokesman Piyaphan Pingmuang said they are among 25 people accused of lese majeste acts following the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

He said police are tracking down the 10 other suspects, some of whom allegedly distributed offensive content through social media.

Pol Maj Gen Piyaphan said lese majeste cases stood at 167 before Oct 13.

Pol Maj Gen Songpol Watthanachai, another deputy police spokesman, said police have received a total of 48 complaints involving petty crimes at Sanam Luang and in adjacent areas where hundreds of thousands of mourners have flocked to pay respects to the late King in the past two weeks.

He said the complaints mostly involved pick-pocketing and lost property.

Pol Maj Gen Withoon Nitiwarangkoon, chief of Police General Hospital, said a total of 4,881 people have received medical services and treatment at the police mobile unit at Sanam Luang and of these, 37 were referred to hospital for further treatment.

He said common health conditions among the mourners who wait long hours to pay respects to the late King are dehydration and fainting in the heat.
