Thailand will cooperate with the United States, regardless of who is president, and with other countries in responding to global change in order to ensure future security, prosperity and sustainability, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Thursday.

Gen Prayut was speaking at a meeting with about 100 top officials - Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai, Thai ambassadors and consuls-general and permanent representatives to trade offices in 97 countries - at the ministry.

Busaya Mathelin, permanent secretary for foreign affairs, said the meeting was called to enable and exchange of opinions and briefing on sustainable development under the government's reform targets and 20-year national strategy.

She said with the meeting's conclusions will be compiled for inclusion in the government's 20-year strategy and be submitted to the cabinet for consideration.

The prime minister said Thailand will continue to cooperate with the US following the presidential election there, as well as with other countries.

He stressed that Thailand must adjust to global change.

In the afternoon session, the Thai representatives were to be briefed by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatisripitak on economic policy.

After addressing the meeting, Gen Prayut said that, if possible, he would like to meet Thai diplomats with foreign postings twice a year, in addition to contacts normally made through the Foreign Ministry.

The Foreign Ministry had to adjust to the changing world situation.

"The world keeps changing everyday.  The US presidential election will bring about change. We have to be prepared for change in areas of security, economic and social fields.  If we are well-prepared, we will be able to talk to any country on any and every matter," he said.
