Political scientist Prof Likhit dies aged 75

Prof Likhit Dhiravegin, a fellow of the Royal Institute and eminent political scientist, died of cancer on Sunday night at Phramongkutklao Hospital. He was 75.

A bathing rite for him will be held on Monday at 5pm at Wat That Thong in Watthana district, Bangkok.

Born on May 11, 1941, Likhit graduated in law in 1966 from Thammasat University, where he was also awarded a master's degree in law and diplomacy in 1969.

He obtained a master of arts degree in political science from Brown University, the United States, in 1970, and a doctorate in political science from the same univeristy in 1972.

Likhit began his career as a political science lecturer of Thammsat University.  He was appointed dean of the faculty of political science of the university in 1983.  He became vice rector of Thammasat University in 1988 and was appoint a fellow of the Royal Institute in 2004.

He entered politics in 2001 and was twice elected a party-list MP of the New Apiration Party, serving as deputy interior minister in the Chavalit Yongchaiyudh government.

Likhit later moved to the Thai Rak Thai Party, serving as a party executive committee member and a party-list MP.

He authored many books and was a columnist for several newspapers, incuding the Bangkok Post,
and received many royal decorations, most recently the Dushdi Mala Medal in 2008.

Prof Likhit was pronounced dead at 11pm on Sunday at Phramongkutklao Hospital.
