Thaksin lays libel complaint against Thai Post

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra had his lawyer file a defamation complaint against the Thai Post newspaper for allegedly saying he lacked loyalty to the royal institution.

Chumsai Sriyapai, a member of the Pheu Thai legal team, filed the complaint at Makkasan police station in Bangkok on Wednesday, citing the Criminal Code's section on defamation and an offence under the Computer Crimes Act.

It relates to an article in the Thai Post on Dec 7, which was also posted online, which implied Thaksin had ordered attacks on the institution, Mr Chumsai said.

Thaksin was loyal to the royal institution and had no ill intention towards it, the lawyer said.

Pol Capt Paisal Suthapoj, of Makkasan station, said the complaint would be considered and a decision made on whether there were grounds for further legal action.

Thaksin has been in self-exile since shortly before the Supreme Court sentenced him to two years in jail in 2008 for abuse of power for helping his then-wife purchase land in Bangkok's Ratchadaphisek area from the state.
