PM urges CDC to finish organic laws by deadline

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is aiming to have the 10 organic laws needed to accompany the charter completed on time to counter critics who say the regime is trying to cling to power.

"There is already a framework as to how many organic laws would be written," Gen Prayut said.

"What I want is for all 10 organic laws to be completed on time."

Gen Prayut, however, said he could do nothing if the laws do not meet deadline as he is not directly responsible for the work and does not want to interfere in the process.

"I will try to do all I can to help bring about the right outcome," said Gen Prayut.

He was speaking Wednesday after chairing a workshop on the national reform drive, attended by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA), the cabinet and state agencies.

Gen Prayut said six panels of the government's steering committee on administration reform are playing a key role in dealing with the reform issues, but the Committee for National Administration under the Framework of National Reform, Strategy and Reconciliation has now been set up to help hasten the task.

NLA chairman Pornpetch Wichitcholchai said the NLA aims to complete deliberation of the 10 organic laws within eight months, noting four of the laws are necessary for elections. The NLA must also deliberate another two important laws on national strategy and national reform, he said.

Both must be vetted within four months of the new charter being promulgated.

Constitution Drafting Committee member Chatchai Na Chiang Mai said the CDC will visit all four regions this week to sound out opinions about the organic laws.
