Prawit vows fair reconciliation talks

Political parties will be invited to share their views on national unity in alphabetical order to prevent allegations of preferential treatment, according to Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.

Gen Prawit, who chairs a government committee on national reconciliation, said the panel is prepared to hear from all stakeholders including politicians on how national unity can be achieved.

However, he said parties will be asked to meet the committee in alphabetical order for the sake of transparency.

Dates have yet to be set, he said, adding that formal invitations will be sent out as soon as all sides are ready.

Gen Prawit earlier brushed aside media reports the government was negotiating a deal with politicians to form a government of national unity to pave the way for national reconciliation.

He also said the committee on national reconciliation will hold its first meeting today to lay down guidelines for its sub-committees. Ten topics have been earmarked for talks on national unity.

The deputy premier said proposals and suggestions from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission chaired by Kanit Nanakorn and other panels will be included in the unity-building process.

Meanwhile, a list of members of the Committee for National Administration under the Framework of National Reform, Strategy and Reconciliation was to be handed to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha Wednesday.

PM's Office Minister Suvit Maesincee said the list was close to completion and among the potential members were Supachai Panitchpakdi, former secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) and Gen Ekkachai Sriwilas, head of the Office for Peace and Governance at King Prajadhipok's Institute.

The Committee for National Administration under the Framework of National Reform, Strategy and Reconciliation is chaired by Gen Prayut.

It has four sub-committees under it to see its agenda through, including the national reconciliation panel.

Mr Suvit also said the reconciliation panel will be free of politicians because the goal is not to foster unity among politicians.
