More faith in Prayut govt than politicians: Poll

A majority of people are pinning their hopes on the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha rather than a government formed of politicians, according to an opinion survey carried out by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, or Suan Dusit Poll.

The poll was conducted on Mar 14-18 on 1,194 people aged 18 and over throughout the country.

Asked which they preferred, the Prayut government or a government made up of politicians on whom they could pin more hopes, 53.27% said they would rely more on the military government which is working according to a road map with emphasis on corruption suppression.

More than 18% said they could their pin hopes on neither of them, reasoning that all governments cling to power and their own interests; 14.82% said they would pin more hope on a government of politicians as they are the people's representatives; and, 13.32% said they would equally back both types of government.

On "happiness" brought by the Prayut government, 79.65% of the respondents mentioned supression of corruption and drugs; 76.13% law and order; and 74.37% decisiveness and straightforwardness.

Asked to mention "miseries" caused by the Prayut government, 80.15% mentioned poor economy and high prices of goods; 73.87% said lack of accountability; and, 64.57% mentioned its state of being undemocratic and unelected.

On "happiness" brought by a government from politicians, 70.85% said this would include democracy, rights and liberities; 65.08% mentioned closeness to the people; and, 61.31% said openness to criticism and accountability.

On "miseries" caused by a government of politicians, 83.42% mentioned corruption and lack of transparency; 81.66% lack of morality; and, 77.89% said quarrels and political divisions.
