The Pheu Thai Party has proposed that an independent panel replace Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon's reconciliation-building committee, which the party says is influenced by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

In the statement issued on Wednesday, Pheu Thai leader Viroj Pao-in proposed the dissolution of Gen Prawit's committee and its sub-committees, arguing that they mainly comprise political and permanent government officials under the influence of Gen Prayut, who is also the chief of the National Council for Peace and Order.

Its lack of independence and neutrality would make reconciliation difficult, he said.

The party leader called for an independent committee look into the causes of disunity and propose solutions. The new panel should comprise representatives from all sectors, people who were generally accepted for their honesty and neutrality.

Proposals from the independent committee would be made public. The government would not change any significant part of the proposals, which would be implemented by all concerned parties, the Pheu Thai leader said.

Pending the conclusions of the independent committee, the government and the NCPO would have to create an atmosphere of reconciliation, by allowing academics, journalists, civil organisations and stakeholders freedom of expression, Pol Lt Gen Viroj said.
