Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has paid out of his own pocket for brand new greenish-blue lotus containers at the Government House, in a move being seen by observers as a way to turn the government's fortunes around.
It was reported that about 20 ceramic lotus-growing containers have replaced the old grey ones which were made of clay.
The plants have been placed in on the grounds in front of the Thai Khu Fah Building in the Government House compound.
Deputy secretary-general to the premier Renu Tunkachivangoon said the makeover was the idea of secretary-general to the prime minister Wilas Aroonsri.
Ms Renu said Gen Prayut had spent his own money to buy the plants and containers, adding that the company the plants were bought from will look after them for free.
Gen Wilas wanted the brightly coloured pots to match the grass in front of Thai Khu Fah building, she added.
Ceramic containers have been chosen to prevent water from leaking, Ms Renu said, adding the clay pots had developed leaks.
The deputy secretary-general to Gen Prayut said she had sought help from the flower company to send a team of gardeners to revamp the area in front of the building.
Ms Renu said Gen Praut was satisfied with the makeover.
"Beautiful! I'm happy and satisfied," Gen Prayut was quoted as saying by Ms Renu when he saw the new lotus containers Monday morning.
The lotus is considered an auspicious water plant that brings luck and fortune to people who plant the flower. The plant is also a symbol of virtue.
An astrologer who asked not to be named said the makeover could bring good luck to the cabinet based on the Taksa system of Thai astrology. He said Gen Prayut was born on a Sunday and green is an auspicious colour for him which could bring him success and honour.
