About 50 suspects are in custody for investigation over the Phramongkutklao Hospital bombing, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said on Monday.

The suspects included staff of the hospital. They were being interrogated, Gen Prawit said at the Defence Ministry.

He would not comment when asked if the May 22 bombing at the hospital's dispensary was politically motivated. The explosion occurred in the Wongsuwon waiting room, named after Gen Prawit, on the 3rd anniversary of the May 22, 2014 coup led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

"No matter what signal was sent, I have no worries," Gen Prawit said.

He declined to answer when asked if the explosion would delay the next general election. He only shook his head.

The bomb was hidden in a vase and believed detonated by a timer. It injured 25 people.

The Wongsuwon room is a VIP dispensary for commissioned officers. The room was completed and named in honour of Gen Prawit when he was army commander-in-chief chief from 2004-2005.

National police chief Chakthip Chaijinda said on Monday that police had identified a suspected bomber. If there was adequate evidence an arrest warrant could be sought this week. He refused to reveal the suspect's name.
