Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai says US President Donald Trump wants to meet Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, although the meeting date has yet to be set pending preparations from both sides.

Mr Don said it remains to be seen whether the meeting will take place this year.

"In a few days, foreign affairs heads from both countries will discuss preparations. It is still unknown whether any clear developments will come out of it. I don't think they can make it in August as it's the summer holiday season for Western countries," he said, adding both parties agreed they do not need to rush.

Mr Don said the delay was good, as both sides would have time to prepare, helping avoid potential mistakes.

"We've learned this lesson in the past and don't want to do so again," he said.

The US will host the 6th US-Thailand Strategic Dialogue in Washington DC on Friday.

Gen Prayut is scheduled to join the BRICS Summit in Xiamen, China, from Sept 3-5.

Meanwhile, President Trump is scheduled to visit Asia to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Da Nang, Vietnam, set for Nov 6-11. The US president will also attend the East Asia summit in Manila, Philippines from Nov 13-14.

Mr Don denied reports the meeting had been postponed from July 19, saying it was just a tentatively mentioned date that was never agreed on.

He also denied reports it was only the Thai side which wanted to meet.

"That's not true, and it was not just a courtesy invitation as they [the US] have tried to talk to us, and in a good manner. We can sense that they are very active," he said.

US embassy spokeswoman Melissa Sweeney told the Bangkok Post the US was looking forward to Gen Prayut's visit.

"We continue to seek a mutually agreeable day for the prime minister's visit to the White House," she said.

"During his call with Prime Minister Prayut on April 30, President Trump affirmed the US's commitment to the long-standing alliance between the United States and Thailand, which actively contributes to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region," she said.
