The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions is scheduled to make a ruling in three major cases involving politicians from the Pheu Thai Party next month.
The first case, set for Aug 2, involves former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat and three other figures for their respective roles in the crackdown on People's Alliance for Democracy protesters in October 2008, which resulted in two deaths and 471 people injured.
The three other defendants are Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, another former PM, in his capacity as deputy prime minister in charge of security; former police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwon, brother of current Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon; and Pol Lt Gen Suchart Mueankaew, the former metropolitan police chief.
The second case involves former premier Yingluck Shinawatra for her alleged negligence in the rice-pledging scheme that caused hundreds of billions of baht in damage. The court has set Aug 25 as the date it will hand down a ruling in this case.
The third case, also set for a ruling on Aug 25, involves a group of 28 people including former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyapirom and former deputy commerce minister Poom Sarapol. It deals with their involvement in government-to-government rice sales to China.
