A Pheu Thai spokesman has denied reports of a rift within the party over the selection of its new leader.

Acting spokesman Anusorn Iamsa-ard said on Tuesday it was too early to even discuss the selection of the new leader because political parties were still banned from holding meetings.

There was no internal conflict over the new party leader and there would not be, even when the leader was appointed.

No one knew when the next general election would occur, Mr Anusorn said.

He was responding to recent reports that Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan was a likely candidate for the Pheu Thai leadership and already had the blessing of its de facto leader, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

She recently visited China to discuss regional infrastructure and farm product markets. She also went to flood-hit Sakon Nakhon province in the Northeast recently, to help flood victims.

However, former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin's brother-in-law, then emerged as a reported threat to her chances after his acquittal on charges of abuse of power in the deadly dispersal of anti-government protesters outside the parliament in 2008.

Pheu Thai currently has an acting leader, Pol Lt Gen Viroj Pao-in. He assumed the role after Charupong Ruangsuwan resigned the leadership in mid-2014. Mr Charupong left Thailand after refusing to report to the junta leaders as ordered after the May 22, 2014 coup.
