Poll: Majority see Prayut as "a good PM"

After three years in office as prime minister, a majority of people say Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has performed his duties well, according to an opinion survey by the National Institute of Development Administration, or Nida Poll.

The poll was conducted on Aug 15-17 on 1,250 people aged 18 and over of various levels of education and occupations throughout the country to gauge their satisfaction with Gen Prayut's performance.

Asked to evaluate Gen Prayut's performance, 30.16% of the respondents rated him as "very good"; 48.72% "good"; 12.16% not good at all; 1.76% fairly good; and, 2% were uncertain or had no comment.

On Gen Prayut's ideology, 81.28% of the respondents said he is driven by a desire to work for the nation and the people. 12.64% said he has no clear political vision, but is working only to keep himself and the National Council for Peace and Order in power. The rest had no comment.

On personality, 65.84% said he has the personality of a military leader, 17.12% said he has the qualties of a democratic leader; 12.56% said his nature is half-military and half-democratic; and 4.48% were uncertain or had no comment.

Regarding decisiveness, a majority - 82.32% - said Gen Prayut is decisive in his handling of political and administrative affairs; 10.56% thought he shies away from making important political and administrative decisions; and the rest were uncertain or had no comment.

Asked about his work efficiency, 73% said he has the ability to solve the country's problems; 18.56% said he is unable to handle the country's problems effectively; and the rest had no comment or were uncertain.

Regarding transparency, 64.56% of the respondents said Gen Prayut is transparent and accountable for his actions; 16.32% thought otherwise; and the rest were uncertain or had no comment.

Asked to name the cabinet ministers whose performances they find most impressive, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon came first with 38.72%; Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam second with 36.32%; Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak third with 36.24%; Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul was fourth at 36.16%; and Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda tied with Social Development and Human Security Minister Adul Saengsingkaew in fifth position with 34.16%.
