Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra narrowly escaped arrest in Kuala Lumpur, slipping out of his hotel ahead of police and flying to the Pacific Island country of Fiji, Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Sennian said in Pattani province on Monday.

Mr Thaworn said the Malaysian government had cooperated with Thailand in planning to arrest the fugitive former prime minister on learning of he was staying at the Shangri-la Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

But Thaksin was vigilant enough to escape arrest and caught a plane to Fiji.

The minister did not reveal when this happened.

The real question is: Why didn't Malaysian Immigration have his name flagged in the computer system on arrival? How could they miss someone like Thaksin and not know who he was (esp if he were on a diplomatic passport) until he were already staying at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur?

Typical M'sian govt corruption and inefficiency.

Tina? Thai education is a joke. Yes it is possible to earn your degree in Thailand, but it is not encouraged nor do even a good number do so. Students are able, some even willing if pushed a little and educators try their best, but the main reason is negligence from the government in all parties and a system that lets students skate.

You couldn't even begin to compare education in Thailand with Japan, Korea, or Singapore. The governments in these countries place education as a top priority and it shows. In Thailand it is an after thought at best, a fiscal nuisance at worst!

Hopefully you are just clearing up the perception that "no one is earning their degree here." I agree that some can and are. I also believe that not much would be needed to fix education here, a single competent administration could make the reforms in a single 4 year term.

Oh, and for the article ... People love Thaksin's money, not Thaksin. Peace.

dis # 26, regarding buying degrees, yes, there is a few students out there working very little for their degrees, but hey, do you know a country where this is not taking place? I know a lot of guys from europe who has made it through the education system without any effort at all.... I think you are being unfair and a bit prejudice in your comments above! Have you got any personal experience studying in Thailand? If you really want to learn (I know a lot of students who study really hard for their degrees....) you can! And...if you really wanna cheat you can do that too, just like in any other country.
I bet that you haven't spent much time in Thailand yet and that you really don't understand the Thai "mai pen rai" attitude. You should have learned by now that Thais refrain from conflict and will do what it takes to avoid loosing face (not only their own face but yours TOO!!)
This attitude is the reason why so many foreigners visit Thailand in the first place and the reason why most foreigners decide to leave in the end. Think about it....
    Peace...

Arresting Thaksin would be one of the biggest political blunders. It would only serve to galvanise Thai's even more. So try but not too hard Mr. PM.

Couldn't agree more! Thaksin and the Democrats would all be sharing a jail cell right now, with a competent third party in office if Thailand had anything resembling a functional, productive education system.

In Germany, 2/3 of their students end up in vocational programs (quality programs - not street gangs in overalls) and 78% complete apprenticeship programs. That says a lot for why Germany is a world leader in industry and economics.

Look at Thailand now, even in Bangkok where the "elite" live, education is an absolute joke. You are literally just buying degrees, and sitting around 4 years until they hand it to you - hanging out in classrooms, playing dress up as if you are a real student. Imagine how bad it is up North. Then we wonder how people like Abhisit and Thaksin could ever get into power, and why the military is allowed to run things, PTP is allowed to have their party run by a fugitive from abroad! Its all a big joke. And education is the key.

Any politician, PTP or Dem, that neglects education is an enemy of Thailand.

Bin Laden works for the Pentagon ... and for a fact he at least used to. And his family still receives billions of dollars in contracts from the US. So maybe Bin Laden can't go strolling around on Broadway, but US government officials that have and most likely still consort with Al Queada, and Bin Laden (if he's still alive) do, and New Yorkers are just fine with it.

That's because politicians are such scum the people have seemed to just roll over in submission, instead of clawing for what is rightfully theirs. Same with Thaksin, the man is on record having worked for the US's Carlyle Group while holding public office, and bragged once he became Prime Minister how he still played "match maker" for foreign investors. The concept of "conflict of interest" doesn't exist in Thaksin's little world - let alone the legions of dopes that support him. He belongs in jail, just like 99% of most politicians world wide.

The last thing the guverment would want is for Thaksin to be brought back to Thailan, what do you think? the mind boggles.

hahahihi, If bin laden was seen on Broadway in New York and they were sure it was him, he would be dead
in less than 5 seconds. You obviously have never
been to New York City. Bad comparison in any case.
Thaksin isn't in the same category as Bin Laden
    you idiot.
